Shin Splints (Medial Tibial Stress Syndrome)

Unsupported foot resulting in shin splints

The unsupported foot collapses, causing increased traction forces from the muscles of the lower leg on the periosteum. The added traction causes small tears, inflammation, and pain in the shin area.

It is a common overuse injury and occurs regularly in athletes who participate in high impact activities.
